Support for Looked After Young PeopleBUTTLE Award

Are you in care or recently left care?

Anniesland College is committed to supporting looked after young people, who aspire to go to college. As part of our commitment to you, we offer practical advice and support on applying for courses, and we will give you every assistance to achieve your qualification.

This year we have helped our learners with:

  • Completing and submitting applications
  • Interview dates
  • Finding accommodation
  • Advocacy
  • Accessing additional funds
  • Career advice and UCAS applications
  • Employability
  • Filling out paperwork such as benefit and  housing forms
  • Pre-sessional and on course guidance
  • Mentoring

We understand the challenges faced by looked after young people, and we are here to help make your time at college as enjoyable and worthwhile as possible. If there’s anything you’re struggling with, however insignificant you may think it is, we are here to help.

Pre-Entry Advice and Guidance

We are happy to offer the following to:

  • Support with the admissions and interview process (all looked after young people who meet the entry criteria are guaranteed an interview)
  • Invitation to looked after young people centred events
  • A named contact at Anniesland College
  • Support with travel costs for attending open days

On-Course and Continuing Support

When you are accepted on a place at college, we offer:

  • A pre-fresher’s week event
  • At least 3 meetings a year with your named contact plus support from your named contact throughout the year
  • Support with accessing additional funds
  • Assistance in progressing through college, to another college or to University
  • Help to access services such as accommodation, counselling, mental health, benefits etc
  • Confidential referral to in-house services such as counselling, learner development and financial advice.

Social Worker or Key Worker?

We work closely with social work services, and provide a central point of contact for information within the college. We can provide progress reports and attendance records if requested, and we are also on hand to offer help with any questions.

We recognise that coming to college for the first time can be daunting for looked after young people, so we actively encourage social and key workers to attend open days/college interviews with their young person. Our named contacts will be happy to meet with you and show you round the college. If you’re lucky, we may even shout you a coffee!

We aim to have a couple of open-days a year for looked after young people, the dates and details of which will be advertised on our website. If you need to arrange an alternative date, please get in touch, we will be more than happy to accommodate this.

Please do email us so that we can add you to our list of contacts, and we can keep you up to date with open days and college information.

Contacts

Lisa Fox and Fiona MacFarlane are the key contacts at Anniesland for all looked after young people, and are available for help with applying for courses, by prior arrangement, either by email or phone.

They are also your first point of contact for anything to do with Anniesland College, and are more than happy to advise where they can, find out information for you, or direct you to the most appropriate person for your query. We do ask, though, that you make us aware when contacting us, that you are a looked after young person. This way we know we’re giving you the correct advice!

Lisa and Fiona are responsible for providing mentoring during your time at college. This can include providing one to one support, advice, advocacy, and general information about study and life at college.

Lisa can be contacted at:

E: lisa.fox@anniesland.ac.uk or T: 0141 357 6001

Fiona can be contacted at:
