Learner Development

Learner Services incorporates a Learner Development Team to help you stay on course.

We are here to support you to develop your skills for learning and can provide this through either, one to one or group work sessions on a wide range of subjects. We want to ensure that you stay on course and achieve your learning goals (qualifications). We recognise that there may be times when you would benefit from extra support in some general areas. Support is available and we are happy to work with you throughout your learning. We can even help you prepare for learning before you start at college. When you apply for your chosen course, please indicate in the area provided on the application form, if you would like any assistance from Learner Development.

Preparing for College

There are opportunities for you to work with members of our team who can support you to build your confidence and the Core Skills / literacies skills to help you access further earning.

Core Skills Profiling

This helps you and your tutor ensure that you are being offered a place on a course that is the right level for you. Core Skills Profiling also helps us to identify any support you might need at an early stage. Learner Development tutors can then work with you and your course tutors to ensure that your learning experience is positive and that you achieve your learning goals.

Assistive Technologies

Assistive Technologies are materials and resources that can help break down barriers to your learning. We have a range of assistive hardware and software and are here to support you in trying out our range of specialised equipment which includes:

  • Screen Magnification
  • Text to Speech
  • Predictive Text
  • Voice Recorders
  • Mind Mapping Software
  • Alternative Keyboards and Mice

General Support

Sometimes you might need support with more general skills that you need to keep on track with your course. Support is available in the following areas:

  • General Writing Skills
  • Essay Writing
  • Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation
  • Skim Reading
  • Maths / Number work
  • Computing Skills
  • Study Skills

Screening for Dyslexia

We use a computer based screening tool for dyslexia. This tool, along with other evidence, provides an indication of how likely it is that you have dyslexia. The results can help us establish support required to help you. An Educational Psychologist report will be required in certain instances and we can discuss this in detail with you.

Pacific Institute (STEPS to Excellence)

These courses are motivational and aim to help you build confidence, learn the skill of positive thinking, decide on your goals and move forward to achieve them. They are fun and thought provoking and each is designed for a particular age range. Learn to develop your full potential.

Meeting the Needs of Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply for mainstream courses. As with all students you will go through our pre-entry process. At this stage we will want to meet you to ensure that we can meet your needs and make reasonable adjustments to enable you to successfully achieve your learning goals. Our extensive range of assistive resources can help those with:

  • Visual Impairment
  • Physical Impairment
  • Specific Difficulty (e.g. Dyslexia)
