Computing (HNC) (subject to approval)

This new course is broad-based designed to allow students to progress to further study at HND level in several computing areas including Technical Support, Software Development, Networking and a new general HND in Computing.

All students will follow a common core group of units before specialising in various optional units.

There will also be an opportunity to gain industry recognised vendor qualifications in several areas including Cisco (CCNA), Microsoft (MCP) and Oracle.   Passing the vendor qualification exams can add significant employability to your HNC qualification.

Eligible students would also have the opportunity to join the Career Academy program.  This gives students a business mentor and a paid internship.  Companies supporting the program include Oracle, Santander, Morgan Stanley, Citi Group, Barclays Wealth to mention a few. 

Entry requirements

  • 1 Higher in a relevant subject and three Standard Grade passes at level 3 or above or
  • NC Digital Media or NC Computing.
  • Mature students may be admitted without formal qualifications.
  • All applicants will be invited to attend an informal interview.

Duration

1 Year Full time August to June

  • Professionalism and Ethics in Computing
  • Team Working in Computing
  • Troubleshooting Computing Problems
  • NNC Computing: Graded Unit 1 (Exam)

Optional Units may include:

  • Cloud Computing
  • Computing Forensics Fundamentals
  • Ethical Hacking Fundamentals
  • IT : Information Systems and Services
  • Mobile Technologies
  • Networking Fundamentals
  • Providing Support to Users

Articulation

Successful students may progress to HND Computing, HND Computing Networking, HND Software Development or HND Technical Support.

  • 1st Year BSc (Hons) Software Engineering

Careers

Former students have progressed to careers as trainee Software Engineers, Computer Operators or Technicians.
