Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults - CELTA

The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is an initial qualification for people interested in becoming teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages and is one of the most widely recognised and respected teacher training courses available. It is aimed at those either with no experience of teaching English as a foreign language or more experienced teachers who are looking to gain a teaching qualification. It is awarded and administered by the University of Cambridge (ESOL Examinations). The course can be taken intensively over four weeks or part time over approximately five months.

Entry requirements

Candidates should be 20 years of age or over at the start of the course and should have a good educational background (normally this will consist of qualifications that allow you entry to higher education).

While you do not have to be a native speaker of English, you should have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables you to follow the course and complete the assignments set throughout the course.

To apply for the course, you will first need to complete and return the CELTA Application form. If this meets the required entry criteria, you will be asked to attend an interview. Please note: The closing date for applications for the course commencing in June is Monday 16th April 2012.

This will last around two hours and will include some group discussion questions related to aspects of English language teaching, a language awareness task, a slightly longer (around 250 words) written task and a face to face interview with one of the course tutors which will last around 15 minutes. Within a week of the interview you will be informed as to whether you have been accepted for the course you have applied for. Course numbers are limited which means that a successful interview is no guarantee of a place on the course and you may be asked to go on to a waiting list or offered a place on a later course.

Whilst acceptance on the course means that an applicant has fulfilled all the necessary requirements and has demonstrated the potential to cope successfully with the demands of the course, it should be noted that this is, in no way, a guarantee of success on the course and that candidates do, on occasion fail the course.

Fee: £1100.00

Please note that this course is not eligible for a Fee Waiver.

Duration

Short full time course commencing June

Course content

The aim of the course is to equip candidates with the basic skills required to enable them to work effectively as teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages. It combines a focus on awareness of both the English language itself and language teaching methodology with a strong emphasis on practical teaching skills, through daily teaching practice with language students.

Further Study

There are a number of recommended books which will be available during the course and which you may like to consider consulting prior to the pre-course interview both in order to prepare yourself a little more for the interview and also as a way of gaining a clearer sense of what the course involves. There are two broad types of book you might consider looking at:

A grammar reference book, such as;

  • Leech, G., Conrad, S., Cruickshank, B., & Ivanic, R. An A-Z of English Grammar & Usage. Longman.
  • Swan, M. 2005. Practical English Usage. OUP.

A methodology book, such as:

  • Harmer, J. – How to Teach English – 3rd edition (Longman)
  • Scrivener J – Learning Teaching (Macmillan)
