Curriculum

We aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum which focuses on each child's age and stage of development. At all times children are stimulated to reach their full potential in all areas of cognitive, social, language, emotional and physical development through the 5 key areas of the curriculum.

The curriculum framework for children 3-5 suggest five key areas to help children become thinkers and doers.

Emotional Personal and Social Development

Children are encouraged to develop self-esteem and self-confidence through the provision of a safe, secure and stimulating environment in which children feel happy. As a result children are able to form positive relationships where they consider the needs and beliefs of others. They learn to share, take turns, work as part of a group or independently. They are able to concentrate for a short time, persevere in their learning and seek help where needed.

We as staff will listen to what the children have to say, be consistent in response and praise. Make time for one to one activities and discussions.

Communications and Language Development

Children are encouraged to talk about their experiences with other children and adults. Listen and respond to stories, songs, recite poems and nursery rhymes. Develop their skills to understand ideas, explore and refine their thoughts.

They learn to associate sounds with words and letters, recognise letters in the alphabet by shape and sound and recognise some familiar words and their own name.

Expressive and Aesthetic Development

Children are encouraged to express and create ideas through a variety of media and to develop their own personal view in response to what they see and experience.

Through arts and crafts, music, dance, stories and imagination play they show an increasing ability to use their imagination, listening and observational skills.

Physical Development and Movement

Children are encouraged to learn more confidently with increasing control and co-ordination. As a result they develop an awareness of space and others.

Behaviour Management

We aim to provide a safe, secure and caring environment where children learn to respect each other and the adults who look after them.

We believe that part of a child's pre-school education is to learn appropriate behaviour in a social setting. Children are never labelled 'bad' or 'naughty'. Disapproval is always focussed on the behaviour and not the individual. We try to help children develop a sense of right and wrong. This involves praising acceptable behaviour as well as interviewing to deter disruptive or anti-social behaviour.

It is our aim to guide children by example and by explaining why certain kinds of behaviour are unacceptable. Should a child's behaviour prove disruptive, he or she will be removed from the situation and given something else to do, when they are ready they will re-join the group.

Parents will be informed of any incidents involving their child and their views sought on reasons for the behaviour. If necessary longer term strategies for helping children overcome behavioural issues will be jointly developed with staff and parents. With the agreement of the parents the advice of other professionals may be sought.

It is our policy that if other agencies such as Behavioural, Clinical or Educational Psychologists deem our nursery environment not suitable for your child, your child will be withdrawn.

Knowledge and Understanding the World

Children are encouraged to develop their natural curiosity and are provided with opportunities which allow them to explore and understand using all of their senses.

They broaden their knowledge by experimenting and investigating the world around them. As a result they ask questions to gain knowledge and understanding of how things work and why things happen. They learn to recognise patterns, shapes, sort, match, sequence and count.
